Ceremony Honors Founding Members, Featured Lei-Cutting, Luncheon and Tours
Lāna’i City, HI, June 28, 2016: Lāna`i Community Health Center held its formal blessing of its new healthcare facility on June 21. The ceremony featured speeches and dedications by board members and the executive leadership, a luncheon and guided tours of the new 6,800-square foot building.
“This new healthcare facility is truly a labor of love and the blessing honored those who dreamed of it, and those who have made it possible,” says Diana Shaw, Executive Director of Lāna`i Community Health Center. “Our vision has always been to offer choice and serve the healthcare needs of the community of Lāna`i and we are very pleased to see that we are indeed accomplishing our goals, and the vision of our founding mothers.”
The ceremony began with opening remarks from Beverly Zigmond, President of Lāna`i Community Health Center’s board of directors. Zigmond shared heartfelt memories of the founding members’ vision to provide healthcare services to Lāna`i residents. Executive Director Diana Shaw then spoke about how grateful she is to have the support and dedication of her team, board members, partners, and donors. The lei cutting ceremony was conducted by Jackie Woolsey (LCHC founding mother), Ron McOmber (widower of Phyllis McOmber, LCHC founding mother), and Feliza Rendon (LCHC community member and supporter). Guests were treated to a catered lunch of Hawaiian and Filipino dishes, desserts and light refreshments. Guests also enjoyed guided tours and meet-and-greet opportunities with medical and administrative staff.
The 6,800-square foot healthcare facility is centrally located in the heart of Lāna`i City where the majority of the island’s approximate 3,100 residents reside. It features 4 exams rooms, 2 behavioral health consultation rooms, 1 specialty consultation room, 1 optometry and 3 dental operatories (one dedicated to children), allowing LCHC to double their patient capacity and hire adult and pediatric dentists. Telemedicine capacity is available throughout the facility and utilized routinely to reduce the need for patients to travel off island for specialty services. The décor is reminiscent of a comfortable plantation home, with big comfortable chairs in the reception area, children’s artwork, a timeline depicting the LCHC history, and beautiful, soothing Hawaiian music playing softly in the background. A multipurpose room serves as conference rom, as well as the venue for weekly fitness classes are offered free of charge to the public. The facility also features a native Hawaiian landscape and a traditional medicine garden with native Hawaiian, Filipino and Japanese plants and herbs.
Goodfellow Brothers, Inc., was the general contractor for the project, with subcontractor Artistic Builders responsible for the major build. Funding for the project was a mix of Federal, State, County, and private foundations. Pacific Growth Associates provided the leadership to secure New Market Tax Credit Funding from CEI Capital Management LLC and U.S. Bancorp Community Development Corporation.

About Lāna`i Community Health Center:
LCHC is located on the island of Lāna`i, the smallest of the major Hawaiian Islands with a land area of 140 square miles. The island’s history is one of transition as the island was purchased by different owners. Each transition throughout this island’s history has forced a change in economic focus and lifestyle produced results that directly affected the island’s residents (and still affects all today). These changes have created the community as we know it today: An eclectic mix of ethnicities and cultures. This broad mix of ethnicities makes Lāna`i unusual and different from other rural communities in the U.S. In addition, immigrants continue to relocate to Lāna`i because family members are able to sponsor their arrival — especially individuals from the Philippines — with 32% of our population foreign born and 10.3% of our households facing linguistic isolation.
LCHC’s mission is to take care of the community of Lāna`i. Incorporated in 2004 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, LCHC’s focus is on our patients’ physical, mental, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual welfare to enrich and empower their lives to help build healthy families in a supportive environment. The mission is carried out by directly providing health services (primary care, dental, behavioral health, and some specialty) to the community; providing activities and services through partnerships with local organizations as well as the many off-island organizations reaching out to Lāna`i by serving as coordinator, advocate, resource, initiator, and convener.
LCHC is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with 330e status awarded in September 2007. Clinical services have been provided since August 2008. LCHC’s target population consists of everyone on Lāna`i, with a special focus on those who live at or below 200% of the federal poverty level (39% of the 2013 LCHC patients) and the under-/uninsured (14% of LCHC patients in 2013 were uninsured).
