Why Provide Behavioral Health Services?
Lāna‘i Community Health Center recognizes that good physical health is difficult to maintain if emotional and mental health needs are not addressed. Therefore, behavioral health is made available to patients as a necessary component of comprehensive, quality health care. These services offer assistance when habits, behaviors, stress, worry, or emotional concerns about physical or other life problems interfere with someone’s daily life and quality of living.
What Kind of Providers Will I Be Seeing?
Behavioral health providers are clinical psychologists or post-doctoral psychology fellows with specialty training in primary care and health psychology. Our behavioral health specialists are knowledgeable about Native Hawaiian, Asian American and Pacific Islander health issues, and have a strong commitment to working in rural areas.
What Kind of Problems Can Behavioral Health Providers Help With?
Our behavioral health providers work with you to reduce your symptoms associated with various chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, fibromyalgia, substance use, serious mental illness, and cardiovascular disease.
Programs for smoking cessation, weight loss, substance use, exercise or other lifestyle modifications are also offered either through group or individual sessions.
In addition to lifestyle changes, our providers also address a wide range of emotional and behavioral issues such as family or relationship difficulties, trauma, stress, grief/bereavement, depression, anxiety or anger. We also can help support you through difficulties with resolving conflicts, improving communication, parenting, goal-setting, school or work concerns.
What Should I Expect During a Behavioral Health Appointment?
During your first appointment, our behavioral health provider will ask you specific questions about your physical symptoms, medical/psychiatric history, any emotional concerns you are experiencing, your behaviors, and how all of these might be related. Social and cultural factors will also be reviewed.
Initial appointments will generally last one hour. Follow-up appointments may range in length (determined by your provider) to best meet your needs, but are generally approximately 50 minutes.
Our behavioral health providers work closely with our medical providers, as needed, to develop and implement the best integrated health plan for you.
Contact us at 565-6919 if you are interested in participating.
