LANAI COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER HOSTS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS EVENT

Sponsored in Partnership by Susan G. Komen, the 4th Annual Community Event Featured a Memory Walk, Free Health Screenings and Fitness Demonstrations
Lanai City, Hawaii (October 14, 2017)

– In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Lanai Community Health Center hosted its 4th Annual Susan G. Komen Ohana Wellness
Day today, Saturday, October 14. “Each year, our organization is so fortunate to partner with Susan G. Komen and provide free screenings and important breast health information to the Lanai community,” said Diana Shaw, executive director at Lanai Community Health Center. “Partnerships such as these allow us to
continue our mission of raising awareness around breast health services and highlight the importance of preventative screenings.”

The event began with two-mile Memory Walk around Dole Park honoring friends and family members who have been affected by breast cancer. Participants were encouraged to wear pink and honor loved ones with dedication messages.  Attendees were treated to healthy refreshments and snacks such as fresh fruit, granola bars and fruit-infused water. In addition, the event featured:

  • wellness booths
  • complimentary fresh fruit and vegetable juice blended on site
  • information on breast health services
  • free healthcare screenings including diabetes and blood pressure tests
  • flu shots
  • behavioral health and stress management information
  • free eyeglass repair and adjustments
  • information on alcohol and tobacco cessation
  • prizes

Guests also enjoyed live Zumba, Kung Fu, Boxing, Tai Chi and Gymnastics demonstrations led by Lanai Community Health Center fitness instructors and students.  In addition to community events, Lanai Community Health Center offers primary care, vision, dental, behavioral health, obstetrics, family planning and specialty health care services and lowcost prescription medication to the community whether insured, under or un-insured. About Lāna`i Community Health Center:

LCHC is located on the island of Lāna`i, the smallest of the major Hawaiian Islands with a land area of 140 square miles. The island’s history is one of transition as the island was purchased by different owners. Each transition throughout this island’s history has forced a change in economic focus and lifestyle produced results that directly affected the island’s residents (and still affects all today). These changes have created the community as we know it today: An eclectic mix of ethnicities and cultures. This broad mix of ethnicities makes Lāna`i unusual and different from other rural communities in the U.S. In addition, immigrants continue to relocate to Lāna`i because family members are able to sponsor their arrival — especially individuals from the Philippines — with 32% of our population foreign born and 10.3% of our households facing linguistic isolation. (Hawai`i Department of Health, “State of Hawai`i Primary Care Needs Assessment Data Book, 2012).

LCHC’s mission is to take care of the community of Lāna`i. Incorporated in 2004 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, LCHC’s focus is on our patients’ physical, mental, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual welfare to enrich and empower their lives to help build healthy families in a supportive environment. The mission is carried out by directly providing health services (primary care, dental, behavioral health, and some specialty) to the community; providing activities and services through partnerships with local organizations as well as the many off-island organizations reaching out to Lāna`i by serving as coordinator, advocate, resource, initiator, and convener.

LCHC is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with 330e status awarded in September 2007. Clinical services have been provided since August 2008. LCHC’s target population consists of everyone on Lāna`i, with a special focus on those who live at or below 200% of the federal poverty level (32.5% of the 2013 LCHC patients) and the under-/uninsured (12.6% of LCHC patients in 2014 were uninsured).
